Loved
“Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”
-Anna Bartlett Warner
“Jesus Loves Me.” It was one of the first songs my brother sang to his new baby, only he changed the words a little to say, “Jesus loves Rosie.” As her father, it was one of the first and most important things that he wanted her to know. And it’s the first and most important thing that your Heavenly Father wants you to know.
We find expressions of love all throughout the Bible:
“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee.” -Jeremiah 1:5
“I have engraved you on the palms of my hands” - Isaiah 49:16 (NIV)
“I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.” - Jeremiah 31:3
But sometimes I forget that Jesus loves me. Maybe I’m upset with myself and I don’t feel worthy of love. Maybe the cares of this life are pressing in and I just lose sight of the One who would like to take my burdens on Himself. The tragedy of it is, when I forget how much Jesus loves me, I don’t have as much love to give to Him as I used to have.
I’ve begun to consider these moments to be an emergency. They are a time to go before the Lord and ask Him to show me His love. Of course, He shows His love every day in the details of our lives, but sometimes I need Him to do something a bit more obvious. I need to feel His smile! I need to know that, “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine.” - Song of Solomon 6:3
I’ve found that the Lord always answers when I ask Him to show me His love. It seems as if He enjoys it! He might show love in a spiritual way, or sometimes He sends someone to my office with coffee and cookies. Whatever the answer is, it always brings the sunshine into my day.
In Luke 7, we find a woman who had been forgiven much. She KNEW that Jesus loved her, and as a result she washed his feet with her tears. Do we have that kind of love to give to our Savior? If not, why not?
Do you know that you’re loved? I’m sure you know many Scriptures that tell of Jesus’ love, but do you know it in your heart? Are you sure?
“Oh if there’s only one song I can sing
When in His beauty I see the great King
This shall my song in eternity be
Oh what a wonder that Jesus loves me!”
- Phillip Bliss
